(though a well-integrated pair of subs will generally always enhance the sound of a smaller speaker).

Also noteworthy is the sheer scale of the soundstage these speakers produce. They give the impression of a much larger cabinet at work with multiple drivers, yet they do the great disappearing job that we’ve come to expect from quality stand-mounted speakers.

Yes, they are on the warm side of neutral, in that glorious ‘lit from within’ way that Sonus Faber speakers generally are. Yet they don’t become overly syrupy or slow and bloated when on the end of a full vacuum tube system. Our Audio Research Reference 110SE with its KT150 output tubes has these little speakers squealing with delight, as do the lower-powered Thor Audio TPA-60 monoblocks.

Detail retrieval is good for this class of speakers, not excellent, and I’ll talk more about that in the upcoming review. But the real stand-out performance metric is the scale that these babies manage to achieve. Wall-to wall sound, quite special given that it’s coming from such a small transducer.

Stay tuned for more!

October 2022 Update:

I just wanted to stop back and update this post, since I’ve just sold the speakers and off they’ve gone to a new home. I’m not going to do a full review, I just don’t have the time. But I will expand a little on my early listening impressions which I posted above. So, here goes:

I liked the Sonus Faber Cremona Auditor M quite a bit, but I didn’t love them. Yes, they have that classic Sonus Faber house sound, which some may like, others not. I’ve owned Sonus Faber speakers in the past and I actually liked them a lot (the original Electa). The Electa’s I owned in the mid 90’s were warm and musical and full sounding but they were also fairly transparent and presented music with realistic body and tone. The Cremona Auditor M is a little less transparent than I expect from a modern loudspeaker, even given its relatively modest price. The warmth it inflects is pleasing and it’s easy to sit and listen to these for hours on end, but I always felt that some information was being obscured, or pushed back, at the expense of the warmer presentation.

I’ve heard the ‘M’ series referred to as ‘Modern’, with Sonus Faber moving away from their classic sound in favor of a more modern and neutral presentation. If that was a real design goal with the Cremona Auditor M, then I have to say that I think they’ve failed. Not that it isn’t a pleasing speaker, it’s just not quite close enough to the line of neutrality for my tastes.

March 2023 Update:

With the stand-mounted Cremona Auditor M long gone, I had the opportunity to pick up a nice pair of Sonus Faber Cremona M full range floor standers, in a beautiful graphite finish – so I went for it. I’m not sure why, exactly, given my less than stellar comments above on the Cremona Auditor M. Anyway, as it happens, my experience with the floor standers has been a very different one. Read my brief review of the Sonus Faber Cremona M here.

We’re delighted to have the Sonus Faber Cremona Auditor M in-house for another retro-review of these fine speakers from the Italian speaker builder.
